Haitian demonstrators have attacked a United Nations peacekeeping base in protest over the rising cost of living in their country.

UN peacekeepers said the protesters also looted food stores in the southern Haitian city of Les Cayes.

Approximately 5,000 chanting slogans against President Rene Preval attempted to set the UN police base on fire.

They also stole rice from trucks as Haitian police helplessly stood by.

Hundreds also demonstrated in the northwestern city of Gonaives.
