Emergency aid for Haiti

The United Nations Security Council has called for emergency aid to relieve hardship in Haiti.

The world body reportedly made the appeal while strongly criticising the violence in the country, which was sparked by high food prices.

Five persons are have been killed in a week of demonstrations.

A UN statement has expressed concern at the humanitarian situation in Haiti, and is encouraging international donors to provide emergency relief.

The vast majority of Haiti\'s people are reportedly affected by a global rise in food prices.
