The Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions (JCTU) is expressing satisfaction with the government’s commitment to improve tax administration.

Yesterday, Finance Minister Audley Shaw announced several measures to amend the tax and custom laws.

Acting President of the JCTU, Wayne Jones said the tax laws in Jamaica have not been adequately enforced.

He said he hopes the government will make good on its commitment to enforce the laws.

Mr. Jones said he is not surprised by the increases in the consumption tax on cigarettes, motor vehicle related fees and firearm licensing fees.

He said the fees should have been increased over-time instead of all at once.
