The President of Haiti, Rene Preval, has nominated a new Prime Minister as part of efforts to prevent further unrest triggered by rises in the price of food and fuel.

Ericq Pierre, a senior adviser with the Inter-American Development Bank, has been selected as the country’s next Prime Minister.

The Senate dismissed the former Prime Minister, Jacques-Edouard Alexis, two weeks ago for failing to address the country\'s problems.

Riots over high food and fuel prices earlier this month reportedly left six persons dead in Haiti.
