Jamaican boxers eliminated

Jamaican boxers Nicholas Walters and Ricardo Smith were eliminated from the International Amateur Boxing Association Americas Olympic qualifying tournament now taking place in Guatemala.

Walters was beaten 14 to 9 by Colombian Miguel Marriaga in their Featherweight bout.

In the welterweight division, Smith was outclassed 14 to 6 by Victor Castillo of Ecuador.

A total of 23 Olympic places are up for grabs in the tournament, which will complete the list of boxers from the Americas, the Caribbean, North, Central and South America.

The outstanding Bahamian Taureno Johnson heads a trio of English-speaking Caribbean boxers through to the semi-finals.

Middleweight Clarence Johnson and light heavyweight Julius Jackson, both of the US Virgin Islands are also through.

The semi-finals are slated for today.
