Cuban President converts death sentences
President of Cuba Raul Castro said nearly all death sentences in that country will be converted to prison terms of between 30 years and life.
According to Mr. Castro the decision was made on a humanitarian basis and not based on international pressure.
He said the death penalty would remain on the statute-book.
Mr. Castro also said he will be convening a Communist Party congress next year.
This will reportedly be the first one in more than a decade.
The congress is expected to chart Cuba\'s future political direction.
