Portland road collapse

Member of Parliament for West Portland, Daryl Vaz, wants the Cascade area of the parish declared a disaster zone following the collapse of a major roadway in the community yesterday.

He said what happened yesterday is a clear indication that disaster can strike in the Buff Bay valley at any time.

Mr. Vaz said he would be speaking with Prime Minister, Bruce Golding to have Cascade declared a disaster area.

Senior Civil Engineer at the National Works Agency, Karl Orret, is appealing to motorists to avoid the Cascade main road.

The engineer said another disaster could happen at any time.

He believes water may have found its way below the road surface, which probably led to the disintegration of material and caused the roadway to crumble.

Last year, rehabilitation work was carried out along that corridor following a huge land slippage, which blocked that roadway for several weeks.
