The government of Trinidad and Tobago has earmarked about 20,000 acres of land to be converted to farms.

According to officials, this is part of the government\'s efforts to reduce dependency on imported foods and more urgently to tackle the rising food prices.

Food prices have risen as much as 40 percent in the region, prompting countries such as Trinidad and Guyana to create the so-called mega-farms.
