Government seeks rice to prevent shortage

Mr. Samuda said the government is continuing efforts to prevent a shortage of rice in the country.

The government recently applied for a suspension of the common external tariff on rice imports from main supplier, Guyana.

Mr. Samuda said this follows Guyana’s inability to deliver the required amounts of the commodity and also the country’s reluctance to provide a contract for the product beyond 30 days.

He said the government is now seeking to source rice from the United States, in a bid to avoid a shortage of the product.

The commerce minister said Jamaica would receive no preferential treatment from the US government.
