Women in media want Warmington replaced in St Catherine by-election

A group representing women media is requesting that Prime Minister and Leader of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), Bruce Golding replace Everald Warmington as a candidate for the upcoming by-election in the St. Catherine South West constituency.



In a letter sent to the JLP leader today, the "Women in Media" expressed outrage at what they described as offensive comments made at CVM news anchor, Kerlyn Brown by Mr. Warmington during a live interview last Tuesday evening.



"This is wholly unacceptable. On International Women’s Day, Mr. Warmington, without reason has insulted, demeaned and degraded us as professionals and it cannot be left alone," the women media group stated in its letter.



It said even though the party chairman, Mike Henry has since apologised for the abusive comments made by Mr. Warmington, who recently resigned as Member of Parliament for South West St. Catherine, Mr. Golding should not condone this behaviour and should, therefore, act decisively.



"Specifically, we are calling on you as JLP leader not to permit Mr. Warmington to be nominated as a candidate for the JLP in the by-election scheduled for April 4," the letter stated.



"This would be a signal that you represent a higher standard of political conduct and that you support our view that the people of South West St. Catherine deserve a member of Parliament who shows a high level of respect to women, to all Jamaican citizens, and to our national institutions that so far Mr. Warmington has consistently failed to demonstrate," the Women in Media added in its letter.
