EPA add to banana farmers woes

Prime Minister of the Windward Islands, Stephenson King claims some banana farmers will need compensation to remain in the business with the signing of a new Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) between the region and the European Union.

According to Prime Minister King, under the new agreement some farmers will be thrown out of the system, while many others will lose money.

Banana-exporting countries will have to implement new measures to allow duty free and quota free concessions for their exports, he added.

He says the Windward Island governments, which stand to lose significant income, on import duty items, will have to find new measures to maintain revenue.
