The Jamaica Civil Society Coalition has started an online petition to get the parliament to demand the long-awaited report of the Public Defender into the West Kingston operation of May 2010.

The convenor of the coalition, Carol Narcisse, said she is deeply concerned that after more than two years, no report has been forthcoming from the Office of the Public Defender.

The Office of the Public Defender is a commission of Parliament and, therefore, is answerable to the legislature.

The Public Defender has missed a number of deadlines to complete his report.

He told a press conference just over a week ago that his office is being challenged by a severe staff shortage.

It is for this reason, Narcisse said the Parliament must act and provide the necessary resources to the public defender’s office.

She said the Coalition will be sending the petition to the parliament before it goes on holiday break.

Narcisse also said the coalition will be asking for an interim report to be submitted to the Parliament by the end of January.
