Thirty families that lost their houses during Hurricane Sandy will receive new units over the Christmas season.

The handing over of the new houses began yesterday in Hamilton Mountain, St. Mary where six of the 10 beneficiaries in the community were given keys.

In addition to newly constructed homes, the families will also receive furniture.

The distributions of the houses will continue today in Portland, where four of five recipient families will be given keys.

The parish of St. Thomas is next on the list.

The communities to benefit include Johns Town, Pamphret and Dumphries.

The houses were constructed through the collaborative efforts of Red Stripe, Food for the Poor and the Eastern Parishes Hurricane Relief Fund.

A total of 365 homes were destroyed by Hurricane Sandy.
