Main Opposition sweeps Tobago election

The main opposition People’s National Movement (PNM) in Tobago has won a landslide victory in the Tobago House of Assembly with preliminary results showing that the party has won all 12 seats.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar, who campaigned heavily in support of the Tobago Organisation of the People, one of the four partners of the People’s Partnership coalition government, has conceded defeat.

According to her, the people have spoken and have chosen to stay with the Orville London-led Tobago House of Assembly.

Political observers have regarded the poll as a referendum on the coalition partnership that came to power in May 2010, and which has had several missteps over the past two and half years in power.
