The grandson of iconic civil rights leader Malcolm X was killed on May 9 in Mexico, according to various reports.

Although the exact circumstances surrounding his death have not been officially confirmed, the US embassy stated that an American citizen died in Mexico City on May 9 and Terrie Williams, a friend of the family, shared information on social media about Shabazz’s passing.

“I’m confirming, per US Embassy, on behalf of the family, the tragic death of Malcolm Shabazz.” said Williams.

John Ruiz, a member of the California-based activist organisation Rumec, alleges that the 28-year-old was beaten to death having met with fellow activist Miguel Suarez.

Ruiz told Talking Points Memo: "He was murdered. He was in Mexico City and I believe they attempted to rob him and he didn’t allow it, so they beat him to death and he died on his way to the hospital. This is all I can confirm, everything else is under investigation for the meantime.”

Son of Malcolm X’s second daughter Quilbah Shabazz, he infamously admitted to setting fire to a house in Yonkers, New York, which killed his grandmother Betty Shabazz when he was 12.

Aged 17, the father-of-two was sentenced to three years in prison for his role in a New York street robbery.
