CARICOM defends position on taking rum issue before WTO

Published:Wednesday | May 15, 2013 | 8:26 AM

CARICOM countries say they will continue to oppose subsidies granted to the UK-based Diageo, one of the world’s biggest producers of rum.

The group says this is because of the impact the subsidy is having on rum producers in the Caribbean.

CARICOM Secretary General Irwin La Rocque told the Caribbean Media Corporation that trade ministers who met in Guyana last week had endorsed the stance on having the matter aired at the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Last August, the UK-based Diageo reportedly warned that  it would reevaluate its Caribbean interests if CARICOM mounted a complaint to the WTO over the alleged subsidies.
