The major distributor of horse feeds – Hi Pro has issued a statement to its customer regarding the mystery illness that has caused the death of several horses at Caymanas Park.

In the statement Hi-Pro says the company is deeply concerned by the distress that a few of its horse feed customers are experiencing arising from the illness/death of a number of their horses.

The company says it has assembled a team of technical representatives who have been working closely with the customers to identify the source of the problem.

The statement also says the company’s production, veterinary and technical staff will continue to work with a team from the Veterinary Division of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, who are conducting its own independent review.

Hi-Pro issued the statement following comments by the Jamaica Racehorse Owners’ Association that the matter of horses collapsing and dying is one of the most serious occurrences at the track in a long time.

Chief veterinarian of the Jamaica Racing Commission, Dr St Aubyn Bartlett, says they had to discontinue production of all horse feeds until they can determine the exact cause of the sickness.

The Jamaica Racehorse Trainers’ Association (JRTA) has reported that over 10 horses have died over the past two weeks from the mystery illness.

President of the JRTA Vincent Edwards says it is possible that the affected horses could consume contaminated feeds.
