Education Minister Ronald Thwaites says a request has been made to the Ministry of National Security for Deans of Discipline to be trained as Special District Constables in an effort to curb violence in schools.

According to the education minister 2012 statistics indicate that there were 1,288 incidents of violent activities in schools.

He said those incidents included three murders, 915 fights and 160 robberies.

According to him, School Resource Officers also seized 1,288 weapons and made 201 student arrests.

Thwaites believes formal training would help the deans of disciple to better assist in the matter of school security.

He says the establishment of uniformed groups in schools is also being coordinated.
