Assault rifle seized in Gregory Park

An assault rifle was recovered in St Catherine this morning.



Police reports are that an operational team from the St Catherine South Police seized the rifle in the Christian Pen area of Gregory Park, St Catherine.



SSP Colin Pinnock, commanding officer for the Division revealed that, the rifle an AR-15 model was found wrapped in a bag under a mango tree in a yard where the team was conducting a search operation.



He further said that the rifle is a member of the M-16 family of guns and is distinguished by a shorter handle when compared to the regular M-16. One 5.56mm bullet was found in the chamber of the gun.



SSP Pinnock congratulated members of the operational team for their good work and pledged to continue the assault on criminals in the area.



The Commissioner of Police, Owen Ellington, has commended the Caymanas Special Operations team for their high level of professionalism and skill that they exercised while conducting the operation this morning.



“Jamaica is depending on us to make our country safe for all,” he said.



He says the skilfull execution of their duties resulted in another illegal weapon being taken from the nation’s streets.





No one was arrested. The investigation continues.
