At least 16 children and a teacher were killed in Pakistan today after the school bus they were travelling in caught fire.

The Pakistan police also said at least seven children have been hospitalised following the incident which happened on the outskirts of the city of Gujrat.

The children, who are between the ages of 4 and 10 years old, were just a few kilometres from their school when the incident occurred.

The driver of the bus is believed to have survived, has reportedly fled the scene and is being sought by police.

The cause of the fire is still not clear, but the police say they have discounted initial reports that it occurred after a gas cylinder exploded.

Two children who survived by escaping through a window in the back of the bus told reporters they smelled gas before the fire broke out.
