NCB workers to resume duties tomorrow

Workers at the National Commercial Bank Jamaica Limited (NCB) are scheduled to resume normal duties tomorrow.

The back to work order was issued during an emergency conciliation meeting at the Ministry of Labour and Social Security earlier today.

About 1,900 workers at NCB branches across the island took strike action today over salary claims.

The Ministry of Labour says talks will continue on Wednesday between NCB representatives and members of NCB’s Staff Association.

The Ministry of Labour has said there should be no victimisation by the workers or management.

Chairman of the NCB Staff Association, Paul Stewart, told our newscenter earlier today that members decided to a strike after the bank offered a salary increase of 5 per cent and not what the workers had requested in their 17-point wage claim.

Stewart has declined to reveal the level of increase being sought but notes that there was an eight per cent salary increase in 2008.

He says inflation and the level of profit posted by the bank are factors influencing the demands of the staff.
