Roger Federer equalled the record for the number of singles victories at the French Open by beating Indian qualifier Somdev Devvarman in the second round.

The 31-year-old swept Devvarman aside 6-2, 6-1, 6-1 to seal his 56th win at Roland Garros - matching the Open Era mark set by Argentine Guillermo Vilas.

Unseeded Gael Monfils followed Monday's upset of Tomas Berdych by battling past Ernests Gulbis in four sets.

Other men’s winners were David Ferrer, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Marin Cilic.

In the women’s draw, top-ranked Serena Williams extended her career-best winning streak to 26 matches by beating wild card Caroline Garcia of France, 6-1, 6-2.

Number 3 seed Victoria Azarenka beat Elena Vesnina of Russia 6-1, 6-4 in a first-round match postponed the day before because of rain.

And former Number 1 Caroline Wozniacki lost to Bojana Jovanovski 7-6, 6-3.
