INDECOM completes Twickenham Park investigation

Published:Friday | May 31, 2013 | 7:08 PM

The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) says it has submitted its case file on the fatal shooting incident at the police academy in January to the Director of Public Prosecutions for a ruling.

INDECOM says the file was submitted today.

Constable Ricardo Mckenzie was killed during a tactical training exercise at the Jamaica police Academy at Twickenham Park in St Catherine on the night of January 30.

Five of his colleagues were also injured in the incident.

During the exercise, live rounds were allegedly expended instead of the expected blanks and six of the trainees were shot.

INDECOM began investigating the incident to determine whether any member of the training team could be criminally sanctioned.

The Commission says it has also made recommendations as it relates to an improved safety regime for Blank Firing Exercises.
