MP to mount lobby for Falmouth pier ownership to be transferred to parish council

Member of Parliament for North Trelawny Patrick Atkinson says he will lobby to have ownership of the Falmouth cruise ship pier turned over to the Trelawny Parish Council.

If he is successful, Atkinson says a board comprised of well-thinking citizens in the parish would be established to guide the policies of the facility.

The Falmouth pier, which was constructed at a cost of US$269 million, is owned and operated by the Port Authority of Jamaica in partnership with the cruise ship company, Royal Caribbean International.

It was officially opened in 2011 and is considered Jamaica’s most modern and elaborate port.

But Atkinson, in his contribution to the 2013-2014 Sectoral Debate in Parliament last week, said transferring ownership of the pier to the local authority would provide funding for the development of the parish.
