The labour ministry is now considering changes to the work permit system because of incidents of human trafficking and abuse.

Labour minister Derrick Kellier told Parliament today that the ministry is exploring the possibility of implementing a tiered work permit fee structure.

He said the ministry is also looking at implementing a pre-approved points system to assist in streamlining the issuance of work permits in various sectors.

Kellier said this would encourage local entrepreneurship and productive investments.

According to Kellier, the measures are being implemented to protect Jamaican workers and to prevent unscrupulous persons from compromising the work permit system.
