No-build zones legislation under construction

Published:Thursday | June 6, 2013 | 12:19 PM

Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller says work is advancing on the legislation which will enforce no-build zones.

Speaking at yesterday’s meeting of the National Disaster Committee Simpson Miller emphasised that the No-Build Zone Legislation is critical to the country’s state of preparedness for the hurricane season and other disasters.

She said the legislation must be expedited and no-build zones identified because too many persons are getting away with building anywhere.

The Prime Minister told the meeting that the No-Build Zone Legislation will empower the Government to prevent construction in disaster risk areas and will also include compulsory evacuation where there is evident danger.

She said the process has advanced and there is ongoing dialogue with the Office of the Attorney General and the Disaster Risk Committee to protect the constitutional rights of citizens.

The Prime Minister has also instructed the ministries of Local Government and Labour and Social Security to implement a plan to address the safety of street people during the hurricane season.
