The three police constables charged with the murder of schoolgirl Vanessa Kirkland have been ordered to return to court on July 12 for a plea and case management hearing.

The date was set when constables Anakay Bailey, Dervin Hayles and Andrew Wayne Smith appeared in the Home Circuit Court this morning.

Bail for the three constables was also extended until their next court appearance.

In her ruling that the officers be charged, Director of Public Prosecutions Paula Llewellyn had recommended that the matter be committed directly to the Home Circuit Court by way of a voluntary bill of indictment.

Her ruling came on May 15 after the Independent Commission of Investigations submitted its file on the matter on February 15.

Kirkland was among several occupants of a car which was chased by the police following an alleged robbery in Portmore, St Catherine, that ended with a reported shoot-out on Norman Lane in Kingston 13.
