Joseph Hibbert is dead

Published:Sunday | June 16, 2013 | 11:49 AM

Former government minister Joseph Hibbert has died.

Hibbert, who had been ailing for some time, suffered a heart attack. He died sometime late last night into early this morning.

He served as Member of Parliament for East Rural St Andrew, between 2002 and 2011, for the Jamaica Labour Party.

He was also a technical director in the Ministry of Transport and Works before entering representational politics. During the Bruce Golding administration he served as junior minister in the Ministry of Transport and Works.

However, Hibbert’s political career ended abruptly after British bridge-building company, Mabey & Johnson, confessed in the United Kingdom to paying him kickbacks.

The former politician, who has denied the claims, subsequently resigned as junior minister and did not offer himself as a candidate in the last general election.
