Principal of the University of the West Indies, Mona, Professor Gordon Shirley, is to head up the Port Authority of Jamaica on a three-year secondment.

Professor Shirley will take up the position of Chief Executive Officer designate on September 1, becoming CEO on November 1.

However, as of Monday he will become deputy chairman of the board of the Port Authority.

Professor Shirley will replace Noel Hylton who is to leave the Authority on October 30 after serving for almost 40 years.

Making the announcement in Parliament yesterday, Transport and Works Minister, Dr Omar Davies, said the ministry and the Port Authority began looking for a new CEO in December last year, but none of the applicants were suitable.

Dr Davies said it was important to identify a suitable person to lead the Authority at this critical time when Jamaica is seeking to extend its port facilities to capitalise on opportunities which could accrue from the extension of the Panama Canal.
