Paulwell mulls increasing ethanol fuel mix

Published:Sunday | June 23, 2013 | 11:12 AM

Energy Minister Phillip Paulwell says he is now considering increasing the level of ethanol used in the current fuel mix with the introduction of Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel (ULSD) in Jamaica set for tomorrow.

Jamaica currently uses a 10 per cent ethanol mix in fuels sold on the local market.

But speaking last week, Paulwell said an increasing number of countries have been introducing higher ethanol fuel blends. He says Jamaica can follow suit as it is clear that more vehicles are able to function with fuel blends containing up to 25 percent of ethanol.

The energy minister says such a move would have a positive impact on the environment.

Two gas stations in the Corporate Area are set to introduce ULSD tomorrow.
