US appoints lawyer to oversee closure of Guantanamo Bay

The Barack Obama administration has appointed a longstanding Washington lawyer to find ways of closing the detention center in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The Department of State said Clifford Sloan will be responsible for closing the center that has held some of the top terrorism captives since it was constructed shortly after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States.

Sloan’s appointment comes after the Republican-led House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed a US$638-billion defense bill to keep the prison operating.

US Secretary of State John F. Kerry said in a statement that closing the prison will not be easy.
