Both defending champions are now out of Wimbledon after Sabine Lisicki defeated Serena Williams in three sets.

The German was shaking and wiping away tears as she came to grip with the fact that she knocked out the world’s number one.

It was only the third defeat in the last year for Williams, and ends her career-best winning run of 34 matches.

Meanwhile, world number four David Ferrer fought back from a set down against Ivan Dodig to secure a quarter-final place for the second successive year.

Spain's Ferrer, who lost to Andy Murray in the last eight in 2012, overcame his Croatian opponent 6-7, 7-6, 6-1, 6-1.

Poland's Jerzy Janowicz, who is ranked 22 in the world, is also through to the last eight after a marathon 3-6, 7-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Austria's Jurgen Melzer.

Janowicz will next meet countryman Lukasz Kubot, who defeated Adrian Mannarino of France 4-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
