St Lucia pressing ahead with plans to make CCJ final court

Published:Wednesday | July 3, 2013 | 8:58 AM

St Lucian Prime Minister Dr Kenny Anthony says he expects opposition support when his government tables legislation allowing the island to move towards the Trinidad-based Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) as its final court.

Anthony says the recent ruling by the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States Court of Appeal means the government of St Lucia will lay before parliament legislation to accede to the CCJ.

In May, the court handed down its judgment saying St Lucia does not need to have a national referendum to break with the Privy Council.

The St Lucian Prime Minister says his government has a responsibility to obey the Constitution by following the route prescribed for amending the Supreme Court Order.
