No privilege for OCG report

Published:Friday | July 5, 2013 | 6:08 PM

Opposition Senator Alexander Williams is calling for a review of the protection from defamation accorded to reports generated by the Office of the Contractor General (OCG).

Senator Williams made the call as he participated in the debate on proposed amendments to Jamaica’s defamation laws in the senate today.

Senator Williams noted that, at present, reports generated by the Contractor General enjoy absolute privilege regardless of where they are published.

However, he argues that this is too broad and persons should be able to sue if the OCG’s reports contain libelous material and are publicised outside of the parliament.
