A man who reportedly challenged the police with a machete after he was caught breaking into a shop in Portland was yesterday shot and killed.



He has been identified as 24-year-old Curtis Clarke, of a Windsor Forest address in the parish.



The Portland police and residents say Clarke was behind a number of crimes committed in the community in recent months.



Reports are that he broke into a shop shortly after midnight and was in the process of stealing several items when an alarm was raised.The police reportedly responded and ordered Clarke to exit the shop.



Upon exiting the shop, it is reported that he ran towards two police personnel with a machete and was shot in the chest.
