Jamaica continued its impressive start to the 2013 IAAF World Youth Championships in Donetsk, Ukraine, following up a commanding morning session, by closing the opening day in a good position.

St Elizabeth Technical pair Marvin and Okeen Williams both won their respective boys 400m hurdles heats, showing good form with Marvin posting a lifetime best 51.33 and Okeen stopping the clock at 52.11; his best time so far this year.

Jonielle Smith, affected by a false start minutes earlier, had a poor start in the girls 100m heats but recovered well enough to take an automatic qualifying spot to the semi-final with a 12.13 run for second place.

Saqukine Cameron finished third in her 100m heat with a time of 11.90, also booking a spot in the next round.

Running out of lane 7, Andrenette Knight came off the bend in front of the chasing pack in the girls 400m hurdles but faded towards the end, holding on for third and an automatic spot in the semi-finals with 1:01.25.

Tamara Moncrieffe barely missed out on the girls triple jump final with a best of 12.48m, finishing 13th and one spot out of the final.
