JPS teams on standby despite downgrading of Tropical Storm Chantal

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) is advising the public to immediately evacuate to if told to do so or to decide on likely evacuation routes if they live in low-lying or flood-prone areas.

Persons are also being advised to avoid flooded waterways and not to go sightseeing in flooded areas.

The Jamaica Public Service Company Limited (JPS) says despite the downgrading of Tropical Storm Chantal to a Tropical Wave, its teams remain on standby to respond to possible power outages.

Head of Corporate Communications at the JPS, Winsome Callum explains that if the island gets heavy rainfall over a sustained period, this could result in flooding and landslides, which will bring trees down onto power lines.

She says JPS teams, particularly in the eastern parishes, are therefore on standby to respond if necessary, and as soon as it is safe for them to do so.
