Talks with private companies for SLB financing continues - Thwaites

The Education Minister Ronald Thwaites says discussions are continuing with private financial institutions towards a workable solution for the financing of the Student Loan Bureau (SLB).

According to Thwaites, the talks have so far examined how private capital could supplement state funding to the SLB to enhance loan provisions for tertiary-level students.

He says while these institutions appear hesitant to approve such an arrangement, the discussions will continue with great optimism and anticipation.

The Education Minister was speaking at the official opening of the 12th Annual Conference of the Association of Caribbean Higher Education Administrators in Montego Bay last week.

He says despite the challenges, the Government is determined to meet its target of providing access to tertiary education for 50 per cent of the age cohort by 2015, in keeping with the country’s national development plan, Vision 2030.
