Jamaica's 2013 Independence celebrations will cost JA$100 million this year, a huge reduction from the $690 million allocated to Jamaica 50 celebrations last year.

Minister of Youth and Culture Lisa Hanna, says even though the country was experiencing economic challenges, it was important for the people to have cultural outlets for expression.

Hanna was speaking at a press conference to launch Independence celebrations at Jamaica House this morning.

Among the notable events will be the National Festival Song Showcase on August 2, the Miss Jamaica Festival Queen Coronation on August 3, and the Grand Gala and Independence Street Dance on August 6.

The majority of events will be held at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre and Louise Bennett Garden Theatre.

The Gala will be at the National Stadium.

Hanna also announced there would be a number of Reasoning sessions.

The topics will include music, politics and youth. The theme for Independence celebrations this year is Celebrating Jamaica: Triumphant, Proud and Free.
