Hosts England retained the Ashes by drawing the third Test as rain ended Australia's final-day victory push on today’s final day at Old Trafford.

Australia were in a commanding position after declaring at their overnight total of 172 for seven to set England a victory target of 332.

England batting a second time were reduced to 37 for three in pursuit of an unlikely target.

However, recurring showers prevented any resumption of a compelling contest after 2:03 p.m. and the captains shook hands on a draw.

The result gave England an unassailable 2-0 lead with two Tests to play in the five-match series and ensures they will keep hold of the urn, having triumphed in the past two series.

Cook's team need to draw only one of the remaining two Tests to win the series and underline their recent domination of one of sport's oldest contests.

Final scores in the match Australia 527 for seven declared and 172 for seven declared, England 368 and 37 for three.
