Independence celebration spending $13m less than budgeted

The culture ministry is reporting that it spent $13 million less than it had budgeted for this year’s Independence activities.

The Ministry reported to the Cabinet yesterday that the total cost of staging the Independence activities at both the parish and national levels over the seven-day period was $87 million - $13 million less than the projected $100 million.

The ministry says the $87 million covered all activities including Mello Go Roun’, the Jamaica Festival Song Showcase, the Miss Jamaica Festival Queen Coronation, the World Reggae Dance Championship and the Grand Gala at the National Stadium.

There had been criticism from some sections of the Jamaican society that the expenditure was wasteful given Jamaica's current economic circumstances.

In the meantime, the ministry says the Fire Service has reported that 27,500 persons attended the Gala at the National Stadium on August 6.

The Culture Ministry also says planning for next year’s celebration has already started.
