New tropical depression forms

The Met Service is reporting that Tropical Depression number five has been formed.

At 10 p.m, the system was located near Latitude 14.0 degrees north and Longitude 23.5 degrees west or about 130 kilometres southeast of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands.


The depression is moving towards the west-northwest near 22 kilometres per hour.

This general motion is expected to continue during the next couple of days.

On the forecast track, the centre of the cyclone should move to the south and southwest of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands on Thursday.

Maximum sustained winds are near 55 kilometres per hour, with higher gusts.

Some strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours and the Depression is expected to become a tropical storm on Thursday.

The Met Service says Tropical Depression number Five is not a threat to Jamaica.
