BOXING: Featherweight champion ‘Axeman’ to defend title overseas

Published:Saturday | August 24, 2013 | 8:32 AM

The World Boxing Association featherweight champion, Jamaica’s Nicholas ‘Axeman’ Walters, will make the first defence of his title overseas.

After Walters defeated Colombian Daulis Prescott at the National Indoor Sports Centre, in Kingston, Jamaica on December 8, last year, it was announced that the first defence would take place in Jamaica.

Jacques Deschamps, the manager of Walters, says for months he has been having discussions with the promoters of the successful title fight last December to have the first title defence in Jamaica.

However, Deschamps says the parties involved in the discussions failed to come up with an agreement.

Deschamps says he has now received positive responses from Golden Boy Promotions, one of the most successful promoters in England.

Deschamps says the likely venues for the fight will either be Haiti where Walters lives, or in the United States.
