Leading St James resort to be re-branded Hyatt Ziva Rose Hall

The Travel Weekly newspaper is reporting that the St James property vacated months ago by former operators, Ritz-Carlton is to begin operation early next year under the name, Hyatt Ziva Rose Hall.

Ritiz-Carlton ended its operations at the Rose Hall property on May 20, resulting in 400 employees losing their jobs.

It is still not clear if those employees will be re-engaged by the new operators.

Following the Ritz’s announcement, news emerged that Playa Hotels and Resorts had acquired the property from the Rollins family and would have conducted its operations under the luxury brand, Park Hyatt.

There were also reports that under the US-based conglomerate, the resort would have been transformed into a six-star luxury property with the addition of some 100 suites to the current buildings which already boast 427 rooms.

Last month, Tourism Minister, Dr Wykeham McNeill told journalists at a post-Cabinet press briefing that a decision has still not been made on the sale of the St James property.

The Opposition Jamaica Labour Party and several tourism stakeholders have expressed concerns that the departure of the Ritz brand from Jamaica would detract from the country’s tourism product offering.

The Government has a 15 per cent stake in the property.
