Putin challenges US to provide evidence Syrian Gov't used chemical weapons

Russian President Vladimir Putin has challenged the United States to provide the United Nations with evidence that the Syrian Government attacked rebels with chemical weapons near Damascus.

This represents the latest setback for US President Barack Obama who has indicated that he is strongly considering military action against Syria.

The US says it has intelligence reports that 1, 429 people were killed in the chemical attacks last Thursday. But Mr Putin says it would be utter nonsense for Syria's government to provoke opponents with such attacks.

The exchange between the two leaders comes as UN weapons inspectors who have been in Syria conducting inspections and collecting evidence left the country and arrived in the Netherlands.

The Syrian regime says the US claim is full of lies and has blamed rebels for the attacks.
