FOOTBALL: Jamaican connection in Liverpool's win

Published:Monday | September 2, 2013 | 8:22 AM

Daniel Sturridge celebrated his 24th birthday with an early goal to lead Liverpool to a 1-0 victory over champions Manchester United in the English Premier League yesterday.

Sturridge, who has Jamaican roots, scored the only goal of the match in the third minute as Liverpool maintained their perfect win record of the season after three matches.

Substitute Jamaican Raheem Sterling also came close to scoring in the second half but was denied by Manchester United’s custodian, David De Gea.

With the victory, Liverpool moved to maximum nine points, two ahead of Chelsea on seven points.

The top two are followed by Manchester City, Arsenal, Stoke City and Tottenham Hotspurs with six points each.

Manchester United sit seventh in the standings with four points.

Sturridge, whose grandparents are both Jamaicans, in July, launched the Sturridge Family Foundation in Portmore, Jamaica.

The launching took the form of a family fun day.
