Holness wants committee to look at Goat Islands proposal

Published:Wednesday | September 4, 2013 | 7:55 AM

Opposition leader Andrew Holness is suggesting that a parliamentary committee be established to look at the proposal to develop the logistics hub at the Goat Islands in St Catherine.

Environmentalists have raised concern about that proposal since it was announced by the environment minister Robert Pickersgill two weeks ago.

Holness, who toured the area yesterday, says he would want the committee to look at the environmental and economic questions related to the use of the Goat Islands as the location for the industrial park and port facilities.

He says a cost benefit analysis would also be necessary.

The government has already explained that while the Chinese investors have identified Goat Islands as the preferred site, a final decision has not been made or an environmental assessment done.

However, according to Holness, the government has not provided any information to justify the proposed development of the Goat Islands.
