Defending champion Andy Murray will face a player in the form of his life when he takes on Stanislas Wawrinka in the US Open quarterfinals today.

The ninth seed from Switzerland knocked out fifth seed Tomas Berdych in the fourth round, and afterwards said he was playing his best tennis ever.

Murray and Wawrinka are scheduled to start not before 6:30 in the evening.

Meanwhile, France's Richard Gasquet is in the semi-finals.

He held his nerve to beat Spanish fourth seed David Ferrer in five sets yesterday to reach the semi-finals.

Eighth seed Gasquet lost a two-set lead but broke in the sixth game of the decider and won 6-3, 6-1, 4-6, 2-6, 6-3.

In the women’ draw, Flavia Pennetta  beat fellow Italian Roberta Vinci 6-4, 6-1 yesterday to join Serena Williams in the semi-finals.

The 31-year-old, ranked 83rd, dominated the 10th seed and goes on to meet Victoria Azarenka or Daniela Hantuchova, who play today.

Williams, seeking her 17th major title and fifth US Open, will face Li Na in the semi-final tomorrow.
