FOOTBALL: Reggae Boyz depart today for crucial World Cup Qualifier in Panama
Jamaica’s 23-member Reggae Boyz squad is scheduled to depart the country today for its crucial World Cup Qualifier against Panama in Panama City.
The match will be played tomorrow and will be the first for new coach German national Winfried Schafer who was appointed head coach on July 17.
For the game, coach Schafer has recalled Marlon King and fellow British-based striker Chris Humphrey, who were both axed from the Reggae Boyz squad last year June for breaking curfew rules.
The players were axed by then coach Theodore Whitmore for the first two games in the CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying Semi-Final Round and surprisingly were not invited back to the squad.
Luton Shelton, another player who was overlooked by Whitmore, has rejoined the squad.
There are two new additions to the squad. Those players are Shaun Cummings from Reading and Wes Morgan from Leicester City.
The Reggae Boyz are in danger of making an early exit from the final round qualifiers.
Under Whitmore, they have failed to win a match in six outings in the final round and are at the basement of the six-team group with two points.
