West Kingston violence impacting school attendance - McKenzie

Published:Sunday | September 8, 2013 | 6:22 PM

The political representative for West Kingston says the recent spate of violence in his constituency has been causing parents to move their children to schools to other areas.

Speaking this afternoon during the funeral of 11-year-old Tassanique James, who was one of five persons shot in two gang-related incidents on Emancipation Day, Member of Parliament for the area, Senator Desmond McKenzie said West Kingston had observed a more than 70 per cent increase in placements at traditional high schools in the Grade Six Achievement Test last year.

However, he says many of the children performed poorly this year because of the increase in violence in the constituency, which reduced school attendance.
